This series is based on a short story written in German by E. T. A. Hoffmann. It was the first in an 1817 book of stories titled Die Nachtstücke (The Night Pieces).

Since the childhhod Nathanael was told a story of about scary Sandman, "who comes to children when they won't go to bed, and throws a handful of sand into their eyes, so that they start out bleeding from their heads. He puts their eyes in a bag and carries them to the crescent moon to feed his own children, who sit in the nest up there. They have crooked beaks like owls so that they can pick up the eyes of naughty human children."

One day the Sandman suddenly comes to their home... He is called a human name, he is an amazing master, but at the sight of him the boy trembles with horror. And already becoming a young man, Nathanael falls in love with a girl who actually turns out to be a skillfully made doll, one of the creators of which is the same Sandman!

This terrible story "Der Sandmann" of love and death belongs to Ernst Theodore Amadeus Hoffmann, a writer who created, according to Stefan Zweig, "an unearthly world woven from fog and dreams, and inhabited by fantastic figures and my photo is based on it.
